The causal interaction between innovations, specialization, start-ups, qualifications, and subsidies: a spatial VAR analysis for various industries in Germany

Abstract: 

The interaction between innovation, specialization, qualification, start-ups, and public subsidy has been a topic in many papers. This paper extends the existing studies in three ways. First, various two-digit industries are studied separately so that differences among industries can be examined. Second, while all existing approaches in this field use regions as observation unit, the approach taken here uses data on the level of municipalities and aggregates this data according to travel distances. Hence, the approach is less influenced by the so-called modifiable aerial unit problem (MAUP). Third, the VAR-LiNG approach is applied, which has the advantage that causal relationships can be detected and that the direction of the causal effects can be identified.

Bediüzzaman Said Nursî (1878-1960) gibi çağını aşan ilim, anlayış ve ufka sahip âlimlerin içinde yaşadıkları toplum tarafından anlaşılması hemen hiç mümkün olmamıştır. Onlar, Cemil Meriç’in “Her büyük adam kucağında yaşadığı cemiyetin üvey evladıdır. Zira yarınki veya dünkü veya ötelerdeki bir cemiyetin çocuğu, kendi cemiyetinin değil” ifadesinin tecessüm etmiş hâlidirler. Pek çok âlim gibi Bediüzzaman da aynı kaderden nasibini almış, içinde yaşadığı toplumun üvey evladı olmaktan kurtulamamış ve bu nedenle çağını aşan düşüncelerini gelecek nesillere emanet etmiştir.

Abstract

This paper criticizes existing economic development models, goes into the roots of the term "develop(-ment)" and by using these roots, it aims to build a new and value-centric economic development model based on the approaches, concepts, and practices of the Hizmet (Gülen) Movement. The values that the Hizmet (means “service” and “serving humanity”) Movement defends and institutionalizes are universal humanitarian values that go beyond being Islamic. The movement takes its roots from Said Nursî's interpretation of Islam and presents a broad perspective for societies, with the concepts and institutions it produces.

The science-innovation nexus in a regional context—introduction to the special issue, policy and future research directions

Abstract

This Editorial introduces a Special Issue that aims to develop a more insightful understanding of the processes and mechanisms that initiate and drive local interactions between science and innovation activities in the economy. The contributions primarily extend this line of inquiry, which is highly relevant in the context of regional Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) policy initiatives in two directions: 1) by taking advantage of increasingly available and previously understudied data on scientific and technical knowledge production, and the intrinsic connections thereof; and 2) by examining intra-regional collaboration patters, a topic that recently has gained prominence in regional innovation studies, via a more inclusive perspective that includes the different actors who are involved in these processes into the investigative framework. The Editorial also provides an outlook towards future policy opportunities and possible research directions in this field of study.

The resilience of German regions facing the crisis in 2008/2009: the effects of innovation, specialisation, qualifications and sectoral structure

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explain the effects of innovation, specialisation, qualifications and sectoral structure on the resilience of German regions (municipal level) facing the Great Recession in 2008/2009.

Design/methodology/approach: To calculate the effects of various variables on the resilience of German regions against the Great Recession, the authors use quantile regressions. To measure resilience, the authors create a number of indexes representing different parts of the economy: resistance performance index, recovery performance index, shift-share resistance index, shift-share recovery index, manufacturing resistance index, manufacturing recovery index, service resistance index and service recovery index.

Using Various Types of Location Quotients to Disaggregate Turkey’s Input-Output Table: An Application to the Production Structure of Region TR33

Abstract

As many other developing countries, the statistical office of Turkey displays an input-output table at the national level only and it is not regularly updated. Yet, the need for regional-level information is growing because numerous publicly-funded development projects and private investments have taken place at the sub-national level over the recent years. In this paper, we create an input-output table for one region, TR33, for the year 2014 by regionalizing and updating the national table through a location quotient approach. It allows us to calculate the regional employment and output multipliers across 35 sectors and to verify if their ranking varies across location quotient techniques. We expect our conclusions will help policy-makers and private investors take an informed decision when investing in TR33.

Ekonomik Büyümenin Nitelik Sorunu

Az gelişmişlik büyük oranda nitelik sorunudur ancak bu sınıftaki ülkeler büyük bir yanılsama ile sorunlarını çözmek ve gelişme yolunda atım atmak için nitelikten ziyade niceliğe odaklanırlar. Ekonomik büyüme konusu da bu tartışmanın en önemli başlıklarından birisidir.

Gelişmek isteyen ülkeler düşük olan milli gelirlerini arttırmak ve gelişmiş ülkeler seviyesine çıkarmak için hızlı ekonomik büyümeyi temel öncelik olarak görürler. Ekonomik büyümenin niteliği ve kapsayıcılığı konusu bu yüzden arka plana itilir.

Son birkaç yüzyılda bu topraklarda yaşayan insanların hiç yabancı olmadıkları bir kavramdır "kriz". Bakmayın dört harften oluşmuş, sıradan bir kelime gibi göründüğüne… Akşam evine ekmek götürmekte zorlanan emekçinin ve emeklinin diline pelesenk olmuş, kahve köşelerinin usta ekonomistlerinin çay sohbetlerinin bir numaralı gündem maddesi haline gelmiş, iş insanlarının yeni teşvik ve destekler için hükümetlerin kapısını çalmasına bahane edilmiş, işsizler ordusuna yeni neferler eklemiş, şirketler batıran ve yeri geldiğinde hükümet yıkan bir kavramdır kendisi. Ekonomik aktörlerin hepsi için olduğu kadar siyasetten sosyal psikolojiye kadar çok geniş bir etki alanına sahip olan bu kavramın değeri, ederinden daha fazladır aslında.

Dar Koridorun Dışında Acemoğlu’nu Dinlerken

Ünlü bir hukukçunun, İstanbul Üniversitesi’nde uzun yıllar ders veren Kework Acemoğlu’nun çocuğu olarak dünyaya gelmesi, akademik hayata dair önemli bir şanstı onun için. Ancak bu tek başına onun başarısını açıklamaya yetmez. 1986 yılında Galatasaray Lisesi'ni bitirip, lisans eğitimini İngiltere'nin York Üniversitesi'nde tamamladıktan sonra, yüksek lisans ve doktora derecesini ekonomi eğitiminde haklı bir prestije sahip Londra Ekonomi Okulu'ndan aldı. 1992-93 yılları arasında Londra Ekonomi Okulu'nda ders verdikten sonra, 1993'te ABD'deki Massachusetts Teknoloji Enstitüsü'nde ders vermeye başladı.
